IMAP Setup
-
Setting
up Netscape
- Bring up "messenger"
under the "communicator" menu bar
and "netscape mail and newsgroup"
window will pop up;
- Edit preference
by selecting "preferences" under
"edit";
- Under "Mail
and Newsgroups", select "Mail server";
- Click "Add"
for "incoming mail server";
- Netscape subwindow
with 3 tabs "general", "imap", and
"advanced" will pop up;
- Click the
"general" tab;
- Enter "imap.fsn.hostforweb.net"
for "server name";
- Enter or select
"IMAP" for "server type";
- Enter your
username;
- We do not
recommend that you set the browser
to remember your password unless
you are using a local hard drive;
- You can change
the interval for checking mail (by
default 10);
- Under "imap",
you can set the browser to move
the deleted mail to trash (by default
just mark them deleted);
- Under "imap",
you must set it to use SSL to connect
to server;
- Plus any other
customization you like...
- Hint: under
"identity", we strongly recommend
that you use "yourusername@FSN.hostforweb.net"
as your email and reply-to address,
please do not reference IMAP.FSN.hostforweb.net.
- Hint: under
"mail server", set outgoing smtp
server to relay.FSN.hostforweb.net
ONLY if you are within the FSN/CS.hostforweb.net
domain, if you are outside of these
domains, please use an external
ISP mail relay server or our authenticated
mail relay "gateway.fsn.hostforweb.net".
relay.FSN.hostforweb.net will REJECT
mail relayed from external sites
due to security concerns.
- Hint: under
"mail server", select "never" for
enabling SSL for outgoing messages,
unless you are absolutely sure SSL
is enabled ALL the way
- Hint: add
"ldap.CS.hostforweb.net" as one
of your directory servers by selecting
the "address book" menu option under
"communicator" menu option, select
"new directory" under "file" menu.
Enter a description you want for
this directory server, like "FSN
LDAP". Enter "ou=people,fsn.hostforweb.net"
for "search root". Then in messenger
window, select "Edit" menu option,
and edit the "preferences". Under
"Mail & Newsgroups" select "Addressing",
check "Directory Server" and select
the server with the description
you enterd above and click "ok".
- Please exit
out of netscape and restart in order
to use your imap account
Setting up Outlook/Outlook
Express
- Start Outlook
/ Outlook Express.
- Select "Accounts"
under "Tools" menu bar option.
- Select the
"Mail" tab.
- Click "Add"
-> "Mail".
- Enter your
full name then click "next".
- Click the
option using an existing email address,
and enter your FSN email address,
then click "next".
- Change the
incoming mail server to "IMAP",
enter "imap.fsn.hostforweb.net"
as your incoming mail server. Then
enter "relay.fsn.hostforweb.net"
as your outgoing SMTP server if
you are within UCB/FSN, and enter
"gateway.fsn.hostforweb.net" if
you are outside of UCB/FSN network
and would like to use our gateway.fsn
as your authenticated SMTP mail
relay server. Then click "next".
- Enter your
FSN username and your IMAP password.
We do not recommend that you check
the "remember password" option for
security reasons. Do not check the
"SPA" option. Click on "next" and
"finish".
- You should
be at the "Internet Account" window,
under the "Mail" tab. If not, repeat
the first 3 steps.
- Your "imap.fsn.hostforweb.net"
entry can be set as default by highlighting
the entry and click "set as default".
- Click on "Properties".
- Select the
"Advanced" tab.
- Select the
box that says "This server requires
a secure connection". We need to
turn SSL on. You can use the default
port.
- Hint: You
may also add "ldap.cs.hostforweb.net"
as one of your directory servers
by selecting Tools -> Address
Book -> Tools -> Accounts,
then click "add" to add the server
"ldap.cs.hostforweb.net". Click
"next" twice to finish the wizard.
Then in the Accounts box, hightlight
the newly created entry for "ldap.cs.hostforweb.net"
and click "properties" button. Click
the "advanced" tab, uncheck the
SSL box, and enter "ou=people,o=fsn.hostforweb.net"
for the "search base". Then click
"done")
Configuring
Pine 4.30 with IMAP/SSL.
> To setup your IMAP/SSL inbox do this from Pine's main menu:
S) Setup
C) Config
scroll down to "inbox-path"
C) Change value
set it to "{imap.fsn.hostforweb.net/ssl/user=YOURUSERNAME/novalidate-cert}INBOX"
E) Exit setup
Y) yes, commit changes
Now quit Pine and run Pine again. You'll be prompted for your
password. You'll now be accessing your INBOX via IMAP/SSL.
> To have Pine-IMAP/SSL use the folders that are already in your IMAP
space, you have to create a Pine Collection. Do the following from
Pine's main menu:
S) Setup
L) Collection List
A) Add collection
Nickname: IMAP folders
Server: imap.fsn.hostforweb.net/ssl/novalidate-cert
Path: --leave this blank--
View: --leave this blank--
type Ctrl-X to save this entry.
Y) Yes, save changes
E) Exit setup
From Pine's main menu, hit 'L' to list folders. Select "IMAP folders"
and hit enter. You should see all your IMAP folders.
> By default Pine won't read subdirectories from your IMAP folders.
Configure Pine to view subdirectories, and enable some advanced commands:
S) Setup
C) Configure
Scroll down to "Folder Preferences"
X) set "enable-lame-list-mode" by typing 'x'
Scroll down to "Advanced Command Preferences"
X) set "enable-aggregate-command-set" by typing 'x'
X) set "enable-unix-pipe-cmd" by typing 'x'
E) Exit Setup
Y) Yes, Save changes
Now you can view the subdirectories with the '>' command or view messages
in that folder with the 'enter' key. You can also perform some advanced commands
on your mail messages.
Note: Pine defines "folders" as containing messages while "directories"
contain more folders or directories. So for example you will see a
"Saved[/]" entry when you list your folders. This means that Saved can
serve as a folder or a directory, hence "[/]". So viewing it with ">"
(actually just "." works) will show subdirectories and folders, but
viewing it with "enter" will show you messages. If you'd like to view
separate entries for your folder and directory enable the
"separate-folder-and-directory-entries" setting.
> To have Pine use your local mail resources also, do the following from
Pine's main menu:
S) Setup
L) Collection List
A) Add collection
Nickname: Local folders
Server: --leave this blank--
Path: Mail/
View: --leave this blank--
hit Ctrl-X to save this entry.
Y) Yes, save changes
E) Exit setup
Note: You can specify any path where mail folders exist, usually the
default is "Mail/".
From Pine's main menu, hit "L" to list folders. Select "Local
folders" and hit enter. You should see all your Local folders.
> To copy mail from Local folders to IMAP folders, navigate to a folder
you'd like to copy from and do the following:
;) Select Criteria
A) Select All (Choose your specific selection criteria)
A) Apply
S) Save
^T) Goto Folders
navigate to your target folder and hit enter twice to complete.
There are several ways to accomplish this, some harmless experimentation
with select is a good idea to familiarize yourself with this process.
Note: Pine's configuration is saved in ~/.pinerc
Configuring
Mutt 1.2.5i with IMAP/SSL.
Mutt's configuration takes place in ~/.muttrc. This means create a
file called ".muttrc" in your home directory.
> Add these lines for IMAP/SSL support:
set folder={YOURUSERNAME@imap.fsn.hostforweb.net/ssl}
set spoolfile={YOURUSERNAME@imap.fsn.hostforweb.net/ssl}INBOX
> To make Mutt work sith SSL it needs help with randomness.
Make a link in your home directory so Mutt can be random.
ln -s ~/.ssh/random_seed ~/.rnd
Start mutt, accept the certificate and type in your password to start
using mutt with IMAP/SSL.
If you are a new user we recommend using Pine because we find the IMAP
support is better.
Information
on Mutt and its capabilities is available
at http://www.mutt.org/.
An example of a basic .muttrc can be
found here: .muttrc
